The IHO S-100 standard is starting to change how marine information is structured and delivered for navigation.
Instead of treating charts, bathymetry, water levels and currents as separate products, S-100 provides a common framework so these datasets can be exchanged and used together more consistently.
Some of the S-100 product specifications include:
- S-101: Electronic Navigational Chart
- S-102: High-resolution bathymetry
- S-104: Water-level information
- S-111: Surface currents
But standards are only part of the process.
S-100 products still need reliable data pipelines behind them: model outputs, quality-controlled datasets, metadata, access management and delivery mechanisms that applications can use.
Datamesh provides the infrastructure to organise and serve those marine datasets, so they can be delivered into S-100 applications and operational tools.
A practical example is the SeaScope S-100 Hub, developed by Calypso Science together with Oceanum and enabled through Datamesh.
The hub provides IHO S-104 water levels and S-111 surface currents for New Zealand harbours and coastal approaches, ready for ECDIS, PPU and other S-100 systems.
From January 2026, the first operational S-100 product specifications entered into force, opening the transition period towards S-100 ECDIS. From January 2029, new ECDIS systems will need to comply with the updated IMO performance standards.
