Directional wave spectra from measurements with DIWASP

DIWASP-Python (Directional Wave Spectra) estimates directional wave spectra directly from sensor observations, bringing a long-standing MATLAB toolbox into an open-source Python workflow.

Over 2 decades after the MATLAB toolbox release, David Johnson, one of the Oceanum team and original author of DIWASP, has finally got round to porting it to a python package with the help of some friendly AIs. Along side the wavespectra package, maintained by Rafael Guedes from the Oceanum team, it provides an open-source workflow for analysing and interacting with ocean wave spectra in Python.Β

  • Familiar Functionality: Five estimation methods included: DFTM, EMLM, IMLM, EMEP, and BDM β€” from fast Fourier approaches to Bayesian directional estimation. Output is a wavespectra-compatible xarray Dataset
  • Open Source: Accessible to everyone for research and development, with the python version MIT licensed
  • Community-Driven: We welcome contributions and feedback to continuously improve the tool.
