New Wave Hindcast Datasets Now Available: Arabian/Persian Gulf and Morocco

Two new regional wave hindcast datasets now accessible through Oceanum Datamesh: the Arabian/Persian Gulf and Morocco hindcasts.

Both datasets span over 30 years (June 1994 to present, with ongoing updates) and provide hourly wave conditions at 5 km spatial resolution.

What’s included

  • Hourly wave conditions for the last 30 years at 5 km: Hs, Tp, Tm, Dir, spread, and many more.
  • 2D wave spectra in 738 sites (Morocco) and 302 sites (Gulf).
  • SWAN 41.31 (ST6 physics) over GEBCO 2025 bathymetry.
  • Rich parameter catalog: 38 integrated wave parameters (Morocco) and 28 (Arabian Gulf / Persian Gulf) on a full grid.

Model forcing

These hindcasts use reprocessed ERA5 wind fields from Copernicus Marine Service. Unlike standard ERA5, the reprocessed winds incorporate scatterometer observations from multiple satellites to correct persistent biases in the model fields, yielding improved wind forcing for wave applications. The models are also forced with Glorys ocean currents and boundary spectra from Oceanum’s global wave model.

At Oceanum, we prioritise using the best available data sources—incorporating datasets like reprocessed ERA5 reflects our commitment to delivering validated, high-quality outputs.

Want to validate before you use it?

Users can validate model performance against satellite altimeter observations using our Wave Hindcast Validation app (https://hindcast-satellite-validation-main-prod.apps.oceanum.io/) and extract statistics using our analysis tools.
