Spectral wave hindcast now available for the Malaysian Peninsula

Oceanum has released a comprehensive, high-resolution hindcast for the Malaysian Peninsula, providing detailed wave climate information for the coastal and offshore waters of this oceanographically-complex region.

Specifications:

  • 46-year continuous coverage from 1979 to present with hourly resolution
  • 5 km spatial resolution throughout the domain
  • SWAN model with ST6 physics package
  • ERA5 wind forcing with full spectral boundaries from Oceanum’s WW3 global hindcast
  • Model bathymetry defined from GEBCO 2025
  • Calibrated against satellite altimeter observations

Integrated wave parameters are available for the full area, plus hourly 2D wave spectra at 425 strategically positioned sites throughout the domain. The hindcast captures the distinctive wave climatology of Southeast Asian waters, including monsoon-driven seasonal variations and coastal wave transformations. The extended time series enables analysis of long-term trends and climate variability in tropical wave conditions.

This resource supports offshore renewable energy assessments, marine operations planning, and coastal engineering applications throughout Malaysian, Thai, and Singaporean waters. Users can validate the hindcast data online using our validation app (https://hindcast-satellite-validation-main-prod.apps.oceanum.io/).
